Supporting Long-Term Positive Outcomes Through Trauma-Informed Care

Case Study

Steven is a young adult with a moderate learning disability and ADHD who has experienced significant trauma and instability throughout his childhood. Much of Steven’s early life was shaped by inconsistent relationships, unmet emotional needs, and complex experiences which impacted his ability to regulate emotions, build safe relationships, and trust others.

When Steven first came into supported living, he required a high level of structure, guidance, and emotional support to help him manage day-to-day life safely. Over time, through consistent support, positive relationships, and a trauma-informed approach, Steven has made significant progress across many areas of his life.

Steven now lives within his own tenancy with 24-hour support from LOVE Care and has developed a much more settled and positive lifestyle. He is supported to maintain routines, manage his home environment, build healthy relationships, and engage safely within his local community.

Growing Independence and Confidence

One of the biggest changes for Steven has been his growing independence and confidence. He now takes an active role in everyday tasks such as preparing meals, completing household chores, doing laundry, attending appointments, and maintaining his personal routines. Staff support Steven in a way that encourages choice, independence, and responsibility while also providing reassurance and structure when needed.

Steven has become increasingly involved in his community and now regularly attends volunteering opportunities and social activities. He enjoys attending the Re-Use Hub each week, where he helps with cleaning and practical tasks and interacts positively with both staff and peers. He has also attended college courses and taken part in volunteering activities involving animals and community projects, helping him build confidence, routine, and a sense of achievement.

Relationships are very important to Steven, and another significant area of progress has been his ability to maintain positive and appropriate social relationships. He enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, going on weekly dates, visiting cafés and shops, going for walks, and speaking with family members over the phone. Staff continue to support Steven to maintain healthy boundaries and positive communication, both within the community and online.

Steven also takes pride in his hobbies and interests. He regularly attends the gym and is working towards personal fitness goals, which has had a positive impact on both his physical health and emotional wellbeing. He enjoys gaming, films, music, and spending time out in the community.

Although Steven can still experience periods of anxiety and emotional distress linked to past trauma, staff know him well and are able to support him using calm, consistent, and compassionate approaches. Having trusted relationships around him, clear routines, and meaningful activities has helped Steven become more emotionally settled and confident within himself.

Positive Outcomes in Everyday Life

Steven continues to participate positively in a wide range of community activities and social opportunities. He regularly attends the Re-Use Hub, where he enjoys helping with practical tasks and interacting with others in a structured environment. He also attends the gym several times each week, enjoys going on walks, visiting cafés, shopping trips, and taking part in local activities within the community. Staff have observed Steven becoming increasingly confident in community settings and more comfortable engaging with others appropriately.

Support records also reflect significant progress in Steven’s ability to maintain positive relationships and communicate appropriately with others. He enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, attending weekly dates, and maintaining contact with family members in a safe and supported way. Staff continue to provide guidance around boundaries, emotional regulation, and safe communication, which Steven responds well to. Throughout recent months, Steven has presented as increasingly settled, calm, and emotionally stable. Staff report that he responds positively to structure, consistency, and reassurance, and is able to accept support and redirection more effectively when feeling overwhelmed or anxious. The trusting relationships Steven has developed with his support team have played an important role in helping him feel safe, understood, and more confident in managing day-to-day life.

Steven’s journey reflects the positive impact that long-term, relationship-based support can have. Through patience, consistency, and person-centred care, Steven has been able to build a safer, more independent, and more fulfilling life within his community
